Smart Traffic Control – Traffic Management
Using detailed traffic data allows traffic managers to see where it is necessary to intervene. In towns and cities, for example, they can manage and control traffic by means of traffic signal systems and detours. On highways they can use variable message signs (VMS) to provide information on traffic jams and/or alternative routes.
Traffic management is very complex, in particular in urban areas where the dependencies and interrelationships are manifold. Frequently, only individual intersections and road segments, and specific flows are being prioritised. Prioritisation of public transport often plays a major role. In this respect, methods for adaptive network control are becoming increasingly important as they allow network-based optimisation and do not focus on single road segments.
